Plug it In, Plug it In

As I was finishing up my leaf raking, mowing, hedge trimming, edging and blowing this Saturday (yes, it was a long afternoon) – I spontaneously decided it was time to finish a small yard project. Basically, that pushed a 3 hour yard day into a 6 hour yard day. But, the work was long overdue so I was ok with that.

I hit up Home Depot (man its been too long) for some grass seed and top soil, and returned to the house with those items + three trays of St.Augustine grass plugs. I’ve never used or had any experience whatsoever with any kind of grass plug. So, I was a little excited to get them into the ground and start the process and see what kind of results I’ll get this Spring and early Summer.

St. Augustine Plugs ready to rock

Though my yard is 180 degress different from last early Spring (I see green instead of dirt), I’m not quite satisfied. In the corner of the driveway resided a nasty fern that I’ve hated since move in. I ripped that up a weeks ago, which was quite pleasurable, and originally planned on seeding some Bahai. But, since my yard is a concotion of St.Augustine AND Bahai – I opted for some plugs since it’s just a small area.

Fern gone, ready for the plugs

The plugging begins..

1/2 way there

Yogi on watch. He enjoyed that responsibility so much, that I believe I caught him cracking a smile.

Overseeing Dad's yardwork - is he smiling??

Fern gone. Top soil in place. Plugs planted.

Grass plugs planted!

Here’s another area, near the carport, that has had its own issues with grass. At this time last year, there was a massive live oak in this exact spot. Though the stump grinders did a decent job, it was a foregone conclusion that grass would fight some residual roots. I dumped about 120 pounds of top soil in the area, and plugged it. We’ll see how this area develops with some TLC.

Da Jeep has officially reached a new chapter in his life.

Seconds away from, dare I say, 6 digits baby!

1 more mile..

I purposely drove around the block here at the office, one more time, so that I could snap this photo with my phone.

6 digits on this beast!

8 more payments to good ol’ Capital One, and this Beast is 100% mine! Word.

The Couch [ (b) June 21, 2001 - (d) October 18, 2006 ]

The Couch, 5, whose pine green color, accommodating warmth, and rugged nature died violently today in his Winter Park Florida home today.

I own this couch

Though The Couch lived a short time period here on earth – his life was captivated by dynamic events and multiple relationships. Used as times as a bed, The Couch welcomed anyone who was in search of a nice place to lay down for the night. His deep cushions, and gentle cloth signaled to anyone that he was a soft-hearted soul with bounds of unselfishness.

The Couch lived through multiple residence transfers. Probably his greatest achievement was withstanding a dramatic move from an apartment residing in Maitland Florida, to his current household in Winter Park. After hours of being lodged in the stairs hallway, The Couch remained intact after hours of pushing, shoving, and brute force applied upon him. It wasn’t until after that move that his health started a steady decline and eventually lead to his conjectured death a little over a year later.

The Couch is survived by his biological Father Eric Sharp, his little Sister the love seat, and his brutally relentless carnivorous cousin, Yogi.

Couch RIP (Thank you Yogi)

A rare photo of The Couch upon death…awaiting along side the curb for his cremation.

Couch RIP (Thank you Yogi)

So with the obituary out of the way, let me sum up this entire mess in a nutshell. Yogi destroyed my couch!! ‘Nuff said right? I tried everything from spray repellants, plastic mats with sharp yielding prongs (which was worthless because he ate those too), and literally smacking his butt with the infamous rolled up magazine EVERY time I came home. Which, if you know anything about dogs, discipline should be restricted to shortly after the disobedience – not hours after the act. But, it made me angry, and I like to think that Yogi is genius and atypical and he would eventually understand his wrongdoing. After months of ignorance on my end, he never learned. The couch deteriorated little by little, week by week, until it was completely unusable. I’m still not really sure of Yogi’s motivation behind this vaulted attack. Either he becomes bored during the day, or wanted me to get new furniture. Either way, it didn’t make me a happy dog owner.

Ok, so my solution for a counter attack you ask? Other than leaving him outside all day and/or having no furniture? The “Scat Mat”. Best invention outside of the Television DVR. This thing strikes fear (even in me), but is 100% Veterinarian approved. Runs on a single 9 volt battery, applies a harmless shock (similar to a static shock) once stepped on, and highly effective. Yogi has yet to jump on my remaining Love Seat since I’ve started using it. If he’s not on the couch, he’s not chewing away. Problem solved.

ScatMat

Man, if I had only known of this product before Yogi pleasantly discovered there was white fluff embedded in the cushions. I guess I’m in the market for some new furniture eh?

Talk about unconditional love, geez.

Stylin’ Storm Door

Home Depot was having a sale on their Anderson Storm Doors during the weekend of the 4th. Install was like $57 for a limited time. Simple no brainer. Get ‘er done!

Before & After

The amount of natural light that now shines into the living room seems to have doubled! The new door provides an attractive feel to the entry of the house, while modernizing it from that old, rickety, aluminum storm door. Man was that thing on its last breath.

The kids just dig the full view! The glass can be changed out for a screen if befitting – but only once Winter rolls around of course. But, for now – bring on the hurricanes! Ok, wait, maybe I shouldn’t have said that.

Clean it, Level it, Seed it, and Feed it

I truly believe the hardwork is now officially over! Well, for the front yard that is.

I cleaned up the areas where the stumps were grounded (see previous post), grabbed some top soil from Home Depot, leveled the areas, and threw down more seed/fertilizer. Now, it’s simply back to the watering process – which I’ve come to master I believe.

Yogi provided the final inspection upon completion – he signed off on the venture.
